08-09 SCIENCE MUSEUM VISIT

Plan

Since the museum is too big to be visited in only two hours we will recommend you some galleries we consider worthier than others. You only need to click on the link (Plan) to have a look at all of them.

- Ground floor

There are 6 galleries here; we see “Antenna” and “Exploring Space” as the most interesting ones.

One Special Exhibition: “Future foods” (really worthy).

- First floor

Five interesting galleries. We recommend you “Who Am I? ” (visit it trough the map)

Two Special Exhibitions: “Plasticity” about plastic and “Listening post” about chats.

- Second floor

Five galleries and We have decided on two of them: “Fuelling the future” and “Computing”. People interested in Ships may visit a gallery in that floor.

- Third floor

Six galleries

The main one is called “Launchpad” a hands-on gallery where you will have a good time trying everything. This floor contains “Health Matters”, “In Future” and “Motionride Simulator”

- Fourth floor

Only one gallery: “Glimpses of medical History” The ones interested in the history of medicine can have a look if there is time for it.

- Fifth floor

Two galleries only recommended to those really interested in these topics.

The National Monument to the Women of World War II

... is a British war memorial sculpture situated in Whitehall, London to the north of the Cenotaph. It was sculpted by John W. Mills and dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II on July 9, 2005.

The Monument stands 22 feet (6.7 m) high, 16 feet (4.9 m) long and 6 feet (1.8 m) wide. The lettering on the sides replicates the typeface used on war time ration books. There are 17 individual sets of clothing and uniforms around the sides, symbolising the hundreds of different jobs women undertook in World War II and then gave back for the homecoming men at the end of the war.

The monument has come under some criticism because it is specifically for women, whilst there exist no memorial specifically to the men of World War II, while others have countered that the patriarchical constructs of society automatically value male contributions to the war effort over those of women, warranting a specific memorial to female efforts.

London-based Polish artist Goshka Macuga is widely acclaimed for her sculptural installations of artefacts and photographs, derived from art history, politics and anthropology. The artist focuses on a key moment in the history of the Whitechapel Gallery: the presentation of Picasso’s Guernica in 1939.
Organised in collaboration with the Stepney Trade Union Council in east London to raise awareness of the Spanish Civil War, the suggested price of entry was a pair of boots, left underneath the work, to be sent to the Republicans in Spain. Forming the centrepiece of Macuga’s installation is a life-size tapestry of Guernica.

Proceeding further, Victoria Tower Gardens is the small open space behind the Houses of Parliament, fronting on to the River Thames. There is an important sculptural group here, The Burghers of Calais (1895) by Rodin, placed here in 1915.
As well, a not very grand statue of Mrs Pankhurst, the Suffragette, by A. G. Walker and dating from 1930.
